Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Ryan Carey and I am a painter from San Francisco, CA
How did you get your start?
While in a high school art class, I completed a drawing exercise where I was instructed to draw a picture upside down. My picture was of a horse and it turned out fairly accurate. It was doing that exercise that taught me that art isn’t just about having technical skill but about perceiving an idea or feeling in a different way that makes sense to you.
What inspires you?
What inspires me and my work is trying to appreciate every moment. There is a purpose to every breathe we take and by using my breathe to paint I try to capture those moments. Oh, and also my wife.
What do you like about AZ?
In AZ you can see a sunset with a fire orange and a deep purple right next to each other. And when reaching a high vantage point while hiking you can look out and see the quiet solitude of the desert where nothing moves
I like that in AZ there is a young collective that is shifting the paradigm from merely western art to art of any style.
Where can we see you(r) work?
My work can be accessed on my website: http://ryanjcarey.net/home.html, my Facebook, my home studio, and at the Monorchid in July.
What would you like to accomplish before you die?
I would like to impact the art of my time.
What is your mantra?
In art and in life, trust your instincts.
