This week a new exhibit opens at the Phoenix Art Museum featuring the portraiture work of Andy Warhol. The museum will be showing works by the influential pop artist from March 4 to June 21, 2015.
At Andy Warhol: Portraits more than 90 screen print paintings will be on display in addition to other drawings, videos, paintings, and photographs. As an added bonus, “an installation of Warhol’s reflective Silver Clouds, helium and air-filled metalized balloons”, will be available for viewing. Amongst the portraits, you’ll find images of famous faces (like Prince, Queen Elizabeth II, and Jackie O) as well as some folks who didn’t quite achieve the lasting fame of others in their midst.
In conjunction with the exhibit, the Phoenix Art Museum will also be hosting a film series of “Trash Cinema” – the films that ask the question: high art or shock value? Kicking off the series on March 22nd with a film directed by the artist himself is Lonesome Cowboys which was shot on location right here in good ol’ AZ. On April 5th you can catch my personal favorite, Midnight Cowboy, starring Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight. John Waters’ Female Trouble (on May 3rd) and Harmony Korine’s Gummo (on June 14th) complete the film series. Additionally, on First Friday in March, the Phoenix Art Musuem and Silver Dream Factory will be hosting a special multi-media event: Exploding Plastic Inevitable. Phoenix’s Wooden Indian will be performing music from the Velvet Underground and a host of local artists (and artisans) to celebrate the work of Warhol. More info on that event here. And, just to offer you a meager taste of what awaits your eyes at the museum this March…
