Ayanna Witter-Johnson
“Declaration of Rights”
We don’t often feature cover songs but this version of “Declaration of Rights” by Ayanna Witter-Johnson, featuring Cleveland Watkiss, is soulful, stripped down, and entirely captivating. Witter-Johnson, a British cellist and singer-songwriter, delivers this message of deliverance from oppression first penned and performed by the Jamaican reggae band The Abysinnians with both power and grace. It seems to strike home with particular force here in the U.S. right now as we watch citizens of our country fight for an oppressor wannabe dictator. “Declaration of Rights” is a song for the era.
