Since I reviewed Sunday At Noon’s Beat Up & Bitter album, I’ve been trying my damnedest to explore even a fraction of the Phoenix rock community outside my average drag, indie, and punk circuit. I always seem to fall victim to my taste-related loops, but on Thursday, April 11, The Rebel Lounge introduced me to a fresh community of hard-working artists and dedicated concentrations of fans supporting the alt-rock they love. Presented by Atlas Artist Group, Sunday At Noon kicked off their “Bring the Thunder” joint-tour with Vegas-based Almost Awake, Arlington from Southern California, and Queen Creek hometown heroes, HeadStrum (in place of All New Hopes)…

For the Record: ‘Where You Are’ by R. Ariel
by Carly Schorman
–
Phoenix songwriter/author and world traveler, r.ariel, is off on a whirlwind musical adventure that has taken her across continents and, as one of her avid social media followers, I love being taken around the globe as she brings her art and music to new listeners and new locales.
R.Ariel recently released her new album, Where You Are, earlier this year and her new book, No One Likes Us, on the SAME DAY. Either one of those artistic undertakings seems like it could be inordinately consuming, but R.Ariel seems to exist in a perpetual cycle of creation…

by Jacob Unterreiner
–
Brother Teresa really wants you to dance, but they don’t want to make it easy for you. The band’s acrobatic, boogie-inducing riffs are infectious, but sometimes they come in irregular time signatures; forcing the audience to think before they groove.
The band is fronted by a pair of singer-guitarists in Joe Allie and Salah Moharram, and is rounded out by bassist Bailey Stewart and drummer Dom Crooks. I sat down with the whole confounding crew in order to discuss their evolution as a band and their debut record: Jam Chill Slam…

If I told you there was a band called The Black Queen and it was fronted by former Dillinger Escape Plan vocalist Greg Puciato, what genre of music do you think they would play? You maybe guessed it: moody, synth-based pop…

by Logan Lowrey-Rasmussen
What and who the hell is Coffee Pot?
For the past few months, I’ve closely followed a musician’s Twitter handle of unknown origins, like Rumpelstiltskin approaching me with a weary bargain, a strange-yet-endearing EP under the title of Anthrophobia ended up getting shoved into the back of my inbox until I felt fully in control of my rapidly-decaying cognitive abilities. Containing the Latin prefix “anthro”, meaning human, how could I resist a short five-track romp with the theme of “human phobia?” I hate humans, and you should too!

by Logan Lowrey-Rasmussen

Although I had the pleasure of meeting Matt Oliviero and Michael Oden from The Smiling Faces and, more recently, of Vintage Clothes, I didn’t get the chance to listen to their August-released LP, Don’t Ever Talk to Me Again, until recently when frontman and guitarist Eric Gallagher brought it to my physical Facebook-attention. The album, which makes me feel like Dave Grohl in “Walk” both musically and lyrically, contains vocal chaos among smart, instrumental qualities Frasier Crane could enjoy…

Which Matt Rendon is cooler? Matt Rendon, the sound engineer behind Midtown Island Studios in Tucson, or the musician Matt Rendon of such noted acts as The Resonars? Thankfully, they are one and the same so we can just embrace our love of all Matt Rendon forms. And, today, he’ll be taking on the roll of official YabYum Tastemaker for this special “Best Drummers Ever” installment of The Tastemaker’s Ten!
