Good Question: Daughters Bring Their Raucous Energy to The Rebel Lounge

by Jacob Unterreiner

In 2003, Daughters played a show at the Mason Jar (before it became the Rebel Lounge). They were opening for Dillinger Escape Plan. Daughters’ drummer Jon Styverson recalls, “I remember the line to get in was wrapping into the street. I don’t know why it was in the street, but it was, and a car came by and hit like 4 people. It was terrible. After the show, I was at the merch table and these four kids came up to me in bandages, with blood all over their shirts–they’re the ones who got hit. They got released from the hospital and came right back to the show.”

This story tells you all you need to know about Daughters; they have fans who get hit by a car before the show starts, go the hospital, and manage to make it back in time to catch the set. It is not a leap to say the music Daughters makes is the soundtrack to brushing off the blunt force trauma of a car accident…

Audrey Heartburn: ‘Dressing Room’ [review + interview]

by Logan Lowrey-Rasmussen

I remember attending Endless Bummer 3 last summer and meeting Salah Moharram and Sophia O’Malley like it was yesterday (and I can’t even remember yesterday). Although I had yet to see their joint project, Audrey Heartburn, it was one of the more quaint personal interactions I had between the energetic sets I caught that day: all three of us trading jokes and discussing bands and musical nuances. I promised myself I would attend an Audrey Heartburn show, but that day had yet to materialize before their debut EP, released on December 13, 2018 would find its way into my meaty claws. The three-track punk-hearted companion crosses a few genre lines, but is noteworthy for its clean composition, artistic intent, and well-timed cues…

Coffee Pot: ‘Anthrophobia’ [album review]

by Logan Lowrey-Rasmussen

What and who the hell is Coffee Pot?

For the past few months, I’ve closely followed a musician’s Twitter handle of unknown origins, like Rumpelstiltskin approaching me with a weary bargain, a strange-yet-endearing EP under the title of Anthrophobia ended up getting shoved into the back of my inbox until I felt fully in control of my rapidly-decaying cognitive abilities. Containing the Latin prefix “anthro”, meaning human, how could I resist a short five-track romp with the theme of “human phobia?” I hate humans, and you should too!

The Double Whammy: Playboy Manbaby

So, when Playboy Manbaby came up at the staff radio show the day after Xmas last year, we were all in agreement that yes, the band deserved an award for their auditory efforts this year. Then, when we moved on to which album stood out more for us, we were at an equal divide. Writer turned on writer, editor on editor, basically, the furies of hell broke loose…

Best Reprisal: ‘Ugly Spiral: Lost Works 2012-2016’ by AJJ

AJJ is a PHX institution and a YabYum staff favorite so it’s no surprise they’re popping up on our end of the year favorites. Except, this year, the band released a collection of “Lost Works” which seemed like it might just be a random smattering of dusty B-sides and perhaps even, dear gawd, lofi live tracks. But, as tried-and-true AJJ fans, we dismissed our doubts with faith that this folk/punk (not folk-punk) act would not let us down with some commercial stint. No, no, not AJJ…
