Million Dollar Quartet Rocks The Phoenix Theatre Company’s Hormel Theatre

Million Dollar Quartet is a jukebox musical based around an unplanned 1956 jam session between Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and Jerry Lee Lewis. They converge at Sun Studios in Memphis for different reasons, and the result is rock and roll history. It is ultimately Sam Philip’s story. The record producer who discovered them serves as the imperative narrator who ties the unwoven pieces together…

Welcome Back…

Welcome back to another year of new content from your friendly neighborhood bloggers. We keep the focus on music, arts, and culture both here in our own stretch of the Sonoran desert and the larger world beyond our dusty borders – it all depends on what strikes our fancy. Longtime readers might have noticed our recent website facelift. We’re trying to moving away from “Big Time Publication” and back to our blogging roots. Less burnout, more love. Less bullshit, more art. More personal experiences and perspectives…

Spotify Playlist: 2019 Favorites

So in case you don’t know, we hear 1000’s of songs a month. Yup, you read that right. Over 100 submissions a day sometimes. We try to cover the albums and songs that we can, but there are always some that slip through the cracks. So, as we wrap up our 2019 Awards, we put together this mega playlist of not only some of our favorite songs of the past year, but also some of the artists that we didn’t get the chance to cover…

Album of the Year 2019: Injury Reserve

Hands down, our album of the year for 2019 is Injury Reserve by Injury Reserve. Highly scientific methods go into choosing our Album of the Year: What album did we play the most in the car? What album did we constantly barrage our friends and family with? What album got the most air-time on our radio show? The answer to all of these questions is, of course, Injury Reserve…

Coolest Band on the Block 2019: The Exbats

The first rule of being cool is you can’t care at all about being cool. As soon as you start thinking about it, or making decisions with the direct goal of achieving coolness, you’ve lost. That’s part of what we love about The Exbats. These cats are just making music to have fun and it shows. The daughter-father team of Inez and Kenny McLain from Bisbee recorded at Midtown Island Studios with Matt Rendon and released a compilation of fan favorites earlier this year that was then released on vinyl through Burger Records. How cool is that??

Songbird Award 2019: L. Hotshot

In the past, the Songbird Award has been given to singers whose dulcet voices climb to ethereal heights. You know, like a bird. Then again, what if that bird was not quite a canary on a branch chirping away, but more like a predator hawk soaring toward its prey? Nothing embodies the destructive power of a bird of prey quite like L. Hotshot from Scorpion vs. Tarantula…

Best Americana Album 2019: ‘Arizona Burrito’ by Jim Bachmann

There’s a Southwestern slant on the porch-picking sounds of Arizona Burrito, the 2019 album from Jim Bachmann. Mixing up blues and country with a bit of roots rock to keep things lively, Jim Bachmann creates a salt-of-the-earth sound for his plain-dealing lyrical sensibility. Arizona Burrito harbors anthems for the downtrodden, love songs for the heartbroken, and adds that little extra muscle you need when you’re trying to keep that boot of the modern world from crushing the life right out of you…

Best Punk Album 2019: ‘Bored Again’ by US Depressed

The trio known as US Depressed dropped their debut, Enjoy Your Poodle, in 2016 and followed it up this past May with the often-dreaded sophomore release. But, for these Valley post-punk-rockers, the sophomore slump was just a thing for other bands… lesser bands. Bored Again pairs misery and misanthropy with a fun and feisty sound that you’ll want to listen to from start to finish. And then all over again…
