Phoenix Theatre Company Presents ‘Sisters in Law’

by Rebecca Rudnyk

The Phoenix Theatre Company’s new mainstage show, Sisters in Law, based on the best selling book by Linda Hirshman, is an intimate look at the relationship between the first two women to serve on the US Supreme Court. Though they have very different ideologies, both Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg are incredible pioneers, and the bond they built in the years they served together as justices is a compelling premise…

YabYum Seven: Chris Ayers of PHX Film Collective

Who are you and what do you do?
Chris Ayers: Up until three months ago I was an Art Director for television, having worked for CBS 5 and the nationally-syndicated TV show RightThisMinute, which is produced right here in Phoenix. I just launched my own design business at ChrisAyersCreative.com where I specialize in animation, illustration and logo design. But my real passion project is PHX Film Collective, whose goal is to open a great nonprofit indie movie theatre in Central Phoenix. Our short term goal is to put on educational film events all over Phoenix…

Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Marla Wentz. Aside from being a wife & mom, I’m a wannabe drag racer and pastry chef. I love exploring and photographing abandoned buildings. I make all kinds of art but my main focus is jewelry. ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’ Does Everything Right at ASU Gammage

by Rebecca Rudnyk

The Play That Goes Wrong is a play within a play. A college production with a small but mighty cast, making due as things go devastatingly awry. Bringing back memories of shows from childhood when everyone invests their entire soul into a production, building sets from scraps and piecing together costumes from Goodwill finds and parents closets. Desperate to making it work. Improvising as things fall apart along the way. Yet this is not a cobbled-together, low budget passion project. It is a Broadway show with a Tony Award-winning set, perfectly constructed and capable of doing the unimaginable. Accompanied by a script with carefully considered errors yielding hilarious results. And as if that wasn’t enough, there are some very impressive magic tricks sprinkled in for good measure…

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane Comes to Valley Youth Theatre

by Rebecca Rudnyk

Valley Youth Theatre has done it once again. This lovely little theatre company that provides a forum for young people to develop and hone their skills continues to show its range, and tear down the stigmas that often shadow children’s performances. This is not a middle or high school school production. These kids care. They don’t just care. They aren’t just going through the motions. They are laying their hearts out on the stage every night. They are serious about our forum. They are planning their future theatre careers, and ambitiously working towards those goals. And because of them, I am confident that our beloved forum will continue…

As a lover of theatre, and everything that goes into developing a production, nothing quite compares to experiencing a new work as it comes together. From concept to paper. From paper to initial performance. From cold read to fully-staged. So the Phoenix Theatre Company’s Festival of New American Theatre is a dream come true event for anyone who loves the forum and appreciates the process…

YabYum Seven: Piper Daniels

My name is Piper J. Daniels, and I’m thrilled to say I’m a writer. My debut essay collection, Ladies Lazarus, received the Tarpaulin Sky Book Prize, was longlisted for the PEN/Diamonstein Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay, and was named one of Entropy’s favorite nonfiction books of 2018. I am in the process of completing my second book, El Mirage, which focuses on love, gender, illusion, and the Sonoran Desert. I worked for many years as a ghostwriter but burned out on narcissism and moved to full-time manuscript consultation, where I help working and aspiring writers see and improve upon the beauty of their work…

Aladdin Brings Spectacular Performance to ASU Gammage

by Rebecca Rudnyk

Disney knows how to do Broadway.

They’ve proven it again and again, arguably most successfully with The Lion King which began its run on the Great White Way in 1997 and is ranked amongst the longest running Broadway shows of all time. Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and most recently Frozen. Disney has proven that animated films built on a foundation of magical and unhappenable-happenings can be adapted for the stage and brought to live audiences. Aladdin proves it yet again…
