Allow me to be the first to say it’s a little bit ridiculous to give “Best Breakup Album” to a release titled, Breaking Up EP, but whatever. We don’t care. And, in the lives of those around us, it seems like 2016 was a rough year for coupledom.
I guess the break-ups of 2016 might have been a bit overshadowed by the tragic loss of celebrity life, but just take a moment to think about it. There was the Sharon and Ozzie split, Branjelina, and, of course, Tiny and T.I. But it was TJ and A that turned a personal struggle into an awkwardly relatable art piece.
The music on Breaking Up pairs appropriately kitschy, bedroom electropop with out-of-this-world vocals turning heartbreak into a dance-able catharsis.
I would also argue that this album is not just for those dealing with a breakup or problematic relationship. My partner and I enjoy a healthy, long-standing, committed relationship that is relatively drama-free, but we still enjoy putting on this release at tense moments so we can sing our aggressions out at each other. Before we make it through one off-tune rendition of a song, we’re laughing at the absurdity of human coupling and it reminds us that we have a good thing going.
Whatever your relationship status, make sure you check out Breaking Up by Couples Fight (available here). The duo is currently at work on a new release so maybe 2017 won’t be that bad. Maybe. And, while you’re at it, you can catch the act performing live and acoustic in our Songs from the Reading Room series below…
