The Quarantine Questionnaire: Sarah Familiar

Who are you and are you in a band or do you perform solo? If in a band(s), what is the name of that band?

Hi! I am Sarah Familiar and I am a solo act, but working on performing with more musicians!

What instrument(s) do you play?

I sing and play the ukulele, uhhh haha, but not like the people in high-school who would walk around campus playing the same 3 chords for no apparent reason.

How long have you been making music? And what first drew you to your craft?

I started “writing” “music” on and off when I was 12, but didn’t start taking it seriously until 16. Going to local shows and seeing other artists do their thing made me realize I could do my own thing!

What was your favorite show of all the shows you’ve ever played?

My favorite show I’ve played so far is my first show at the Pueblo in 2016. Being another hipster girl with a ukulele, I was nervous about how I’d be received, but I was met with so much support and encouragement! I also learned how much I love the spotlight, haha!

What would be your dream lineup/location?

This is going to sound nuts, but I am obsessed with seeing the Aquabats live, and I’d love to experience a System Of A Down show. I can’t even begin to imagine how weird of a concert that would be, but if Lil Wayne can tour with Blink 182, anything is possible.

What are you listening to during this period of social distancing?

Too much Ashnikko. Not enough Ashnikko? Not sure yet, but definitely Ashnikko.

What are you binge watching/reading?

I recently got caught up with Ozark, currently working my way through Yu-Gi-Oh and good old Trailer Park Boys!

What else are you doing with these extra hours at home? Extra creative time?

Honestly, mostly been playing video games, AND working on some collaborative stuff with other local creatives!

If you could Facetime/Zoom anyone in the world for an extended convo right now, who would it be? Facetime or Zoom?

I would love to have a conversation with Jamali Maddix, comedian and host of the docu-series Hate Thy Neighbor. This household is an android household, so I’m gonna have to pass on Facetime.

Favorite food you can make at home?

Well this is not something I planned on sharing with an audience, but I actually don’t cook. YET! I can decorate a mean cake though 😉 I just made my own mermaid design, and got asked to make cakes for a future event!

Are you currently working on any new musical projects? If so, what?

Oooooh, I’m actually releasing my first album this October! I recently got my album artwork, done by Alyssa Morton, and it is KILLER. I’m also working alongside Dylan of Grin Scraped Thin as we roll out a new music collective, MT Threat Productions. We are currently raising funds to help get its feet off the ground, and 15% of donations will go towards Phoenix Allies for Community Health. We’ve already got things lined up for other local musicians, such as the one and only The Doyenne and Better Problems (formerly known as Bad Times)!

How can folx support your musical endeavors? Can people check out or purchase your work online? What other options might be available?

October 4, my first record will be available on Bandcamp, Spotify, YouTube, and other streaming platforms! Keep your eyes peeled for some live-stream shows!
